LETTER: Why Paris residents should be concerned about their water

You should be worried about your water.

The Concerned Citizens Of Brant have been asking for Dufferin Aggregates to prove that our water is safe for two years now and they continue to rely on public insults to erode our support rather than provide proof that our aquifer will be safe.

They were quoted in the paper asking us to trust the science that says our water is safe. We said show us this science and we will believe you.

We have not seen any science and cannot find any science that has ever been completed that has studied the chemical makeup of the water in the source water ponds or settling ponds.

There has not been any measurements of the changes in water caused by removing 50 feet of dirt from above an aquifer.

There has been no studies that show the chemical makeup of the waste that is scraped from the settling ponds and neither has its affect been studied when it has been spread out in the wells’ capture zone, with only one metre of gravel left above the aquifer.

Any intelligent person would agree that the scientific testing of each of these scenarios would have to be done and the results known to be able to use science as your argument as proof that our water is safe.

There are no standard operating procedures or best practice guidelines to measure any of these scenarios, even though they work right on top of municipal capture wells.

Not only has none of this type of testing been done, they have hundreds of lawyers and lobbyists helping to guide our government to ensure that none of this testing is required.

At a recent meeting attended by a pesticide specialist, toxicologist, several hydrogeologists and others charged with protecting our water, CCOB presented its hypothesis that pesticides concentrate in the wash pond.

One of the participants closed with his dissatisfaction with the current proposal and stated that “as the medical officer” and person responsible for the health of this community, in all he has seen and read he has reason to be concerned.

He does not know if these concerns are real, but he also sees that in all this engineering there is nothing here that gives him a sense of comfort that we will not have an issue. He asked, with all the experts in the room, if any of them could confirm or deny this as a threat. The answer was no.

If the people engaged in protecting our water are not measuring these things then they are not truly protecting our water as advertised.

True science does not leave any questions unanswered. It does not use opinion or feeling. It answers questions with data.

When it comes to protecting our water, only the truth matters. A sales pitch or insult war does not protect your water. Only you will once you know the truth.

Stand with CCOB and demand that our water be protected.
