Ribbers all fired up for Brantford Kinsmen Ribfest

News Jul 15, 2016 by Colleen Toms Brant News

Five of North America’s best ribbers will be feeling the heat of competition when the seventh annual Brantford Kinsmen Ribfest returns to Cockshutt Park on August 5, 6 and 7.

“These ribbers come from all over, some are from the States and some are from the Port Dover area,” entertainment co-ordinator Jeff Harding said. “They are always competing wherever they go on the rib festival circuit and they always have their trophies lined up in front of their rigs.”

Tennessee Fatbacks, Bad Wolf BBQ, Crazy Canuck Smokers, Gator BBQ and Brick Yard BBQ will fire up their grills and put forth their tastiest chicken, ribs and sauce recipes to earn prizes such as People’s Choice, Best Sauce, Best Chicken, Best Ribs and Best Pig Rigs.

“This is a big thing for them,” Harding said. “This is what they do for a lot of the time. It’s nothing for these companies to have two or three of these rigs at ribfests all summer.”

In addition to sampling some of the best ribs going and voting on their favourites, people attending the festival will be fully entertained.

“We’ve got some of the best local bands coming out this year,” Harding said. “This is probably the best entertainment line-up we’ve had yet.”

The fun kicks off Friday at 4 p.m. when all main areas will open. Opening ceremonies will be held at 4 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Nighthawk will take to the main stage.

AC/DC tribute headliner Squeeler will close out the night from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The gates open again at 11 a.m. Saturday with music beginning at noon. Bands include Cross Town Traffic, Hairy Mulligan, Barcode and Freedom Train.  Little ones (and not so little ones) can bounce the day away in the RBC KidZone where several different inflatables will be set up.

Food vendors will sell items like blooming onions, burgers and corn-on-the-cob, a beer garden sponsored by Molson Coors will be on site and local vendors will be selling their wares.

On Sunday gates open again at 11 a.m. and children can enjoy a meet and greet with Elsa and Batman from noon until 3 p.m. Music will commence at noon with Circle 5, The Red LaForme Band and the Travelling Beer Bellies.

Ribbers will be awarded Sunday at 4:30 p.m. and closing ceremonies will be held at 7 p.m.

Admission to the Brantford Kinsmen Ribfest is free but donations at the gate are greatly appreciated. Money raised goes towards activities and services for community children.

Volunteers are still needed for the event, which is an ideal way for high school students to earn mandatory volunteer hours. People interested in volunteering can email volunteers@brantfordkinsmen.ca or message the Brantford Kinsmen Facebook page.
