Ascot Royals release album

Brant News

Lauren Baron BRANT NEWS The Ascot Royals have found their sound. “It’s a mix of British-North American-Israeli,” said Ben Chauveau, the band’s keyboardist. After years of touring across Canada, an assortment of lineup changes and hours upon hours spent fine-tuning, the Brant band recently released its first full-length album. Filled with dance-rock songs, Don’t Let it Stop You reflects the band’s global roots, with “British twang” stemming from brothers Ben and Jimmy Chauveau’s birthplace, the North American roots sound of drummer Sam Stark, as well as inspiration from guitarist Tal Vaisman’s home country, Israel. Bassist Ryan Frith joined the band following the album’s release. “We clarified our sound and it just came naturally,” Ben said. “Its nice to see that we have a 10-song project that truly sounds like us.” The band wrote every song on the album, either as a collective or individually. “(Our songwriting process) is really unorthodox," Ben said. "Everyone brings ideas to the table and everyone values ideas as much as the rest. “We put ideas on the table and start working on stuff and see what happens. There’s no consistency. Next thing you know we are jamming and building a song.” The new album was officially released during a sold-out CD release party at Toronto’s El Mocambo in November. Since then, the Ascot Royals say they’ve heard nothing but positive reviews. “The feedback has been tremendous,” Jimmy said. “So far, it’s overwhelming, just texts and messages and support from people saying ‘I love it.’ They’re excited and that’s really nice and humbling.” The album was a necessity for the band, which had been travelling across Canada for years without something tangible to offer its fans. “It’s good to have a foundation,” Jimmy said. “Something to put out there. It’s nice now that (fans) have something they can take home and hopefully share with all of their friends.” The Ascot Royals will follow up the new album with the release of music videos, starting with lead single We’re All Fine sometime in January. Despite the pressure on many bands to get signed to a major record company and follow a set path, the Ascot Royals have opted to shed the stress and do things their own way. “We have taken the pressure off a thorough timeline and are taking it stride by stride,” Ben said. “Our goal is to just get exposure, obviously. Hopefully with the release of videos and running typical publicity campaigns with blogs and online sources, we can get some exposure for this thing.” Copies of Don’t Let it Stop You are available on iTunes and at www.theascotroyals.com.
