Jimmy Rankin wants to give the gift of music this Christmas.
The Canadian Celtic-country-folk artist and member of the Rankin Family band has recently released his first solo Christmas album, Tinsel Town, which doubles as a greeting card.
“You can open it up and put a personalized greeting to whoever you would like to send the card to,” Rankin said. “So you send this greeting card and inside it’s the gift of music.”
Rankin will bring the gift of music to the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts for a holiday-themed show on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 8 p.m.
Despite coming from a musical family whose members are no strangers to holiday concerts, Rankin was hesitant to sit down and pen his own Christmas collection.
But after performing a rockabilly version of Jingle Bell Rock on last year’s George Canyon Christmas Special on CMT, his inspiration was flowing.
“I went home and immediately started thinking about Christmas music and started writing Christmas music (with songwriter Patricia Conroy),” he said. “We wrote five or six Christmas songs that I was very surprised were really good and then I started thinking about what other songs I’d like to include on the CD.”
His original songs run the gamut from the “postcard perfect Christmas song” Tinsel Town to the Christmas party anthem Boogie Woogie Christmas.
“We drew from our past and the Christmas memories we had from growing up,” he said. “Christmas was always a huge deal in my house.”
The song Don’t Want to Say Goodbye to Christmas laments the season’s fleeting excitement.
“We were thinking about the Charlie Brown Christmas special and how much you would look forward to watching it on TV,” Rankin said. “Back then, you had one chance to see it on TV and you didn’t get to see it for the rest of the year.”
Rankin will perform Christmas classics and his new holiday tracks during his Sanderson Centre concert. Tickets to see Jimmy Rankin cost $39 and can be purchased at the Sanderson Centre box office at 88 Dalhousie St., by phone at 519-758-8090 or online at www.sandersoncentre.ca.
