Staff Report
BRANT NEWS

Ryan Goodall is a 13 year-old student at Agnes Hodge who is very involved in a wide variety of sports. Goodall participates in football, hockey, skiing, and paintballing.

Goodall’s main passion is football, which he’s been playing for five seasons with a variety of teams. Goodall has been a member of the Bantam Red Championship team, which won the 2012 season. He has also been participating in Brantford Bison’s Varsity football for two seasons in the spring, and Bison’s regular fall team for three seasons. Because of all of his hard work and constant training for football, it has led him to receive the Annual Offensive Lineman Award for two years in 2011 and 2012.

In addition to every year being full of playing football, Goodall also plays for the Brantford Minor Hockey Association and the Hockey League Peewee championship team. Keeping up with hockey and football is no small feat but Goodall manages to do it all while still having a great time.

Currently, Goodall is training for the Bantam spring football season with Jykine Bradley of Bradley Sports Performance. This is helping him to stay in shape and train to become a more skillful member of the team. But this hasn’t kept Goodall from having some fun with sports as well; he loves to ski and play paintball as recreational activities to keep him busy and have some fun with his friends.

Congratulations and good luck Ryan!

Kennedy Russell is a 15 year-old student at North Park Collegiate. She is in Grade 10 and has focused her athletic career on swimming.

Russell started swimming with the Simcoe Swim Team at the age of seven before coming to the Brantford Aquatic Club at the age of 12 where she won the highest award for leadership, the Squad 4 LEAD Award for the 2010-2011 season.

For the 2011-2012 season, Russell managed to get the Age Group Performance Award. Russell was also presented with the Provincial and Eastern Championship Qualifier Awards while at the Brantford Aquatic Club.

When Russell temporarily went to Simcoe Composite School for Grade 9, she was the only swimmer to qualify for OFSAA where she swam two events.
Although Russell participates in many different events in swimming, her favourite to perform in is the Individual 400m swim.

Swimming isn’t the only thing Russell excels at though. This Grade 10 student is looking to use her honour roll grades to get her into university for sciences which is her favourite school subject, and eventually become a psychiatrist.

When it comes to swimming, Russell wants to qualify for her age group at nationals and eventually, at senior nationals. She isn’t afraid to dream big though – she’s hoping to one day make it to the Olympics as a swimmer.

Congratulations and good luck Kennedy!

Anthony Escobar is a 13 year-old student who is dedicated to playing football. He attends Our Lady of Providence as an eighth grader.

Escobar has been playing football for six years now for the Brantford Bison’s. He has played as a dedicated member of the team and proceeds to improve every year that he plays. Escobar has many awards to show for his hard work, something very gratifying for a student this young.

Playing football can be a challenging thing at the age of 13, but Escobar has managed to win a variety of awards while playing for the Bison’s. Escobar has won many line-man awards as well as a few defensive awards. Clearly Escobar has a wide range of abilities on the field, and this helped lead him to winning the Bison’s award for his hard work. In addition, he has also won the Most Improved award.

In order to learn these skills and win these awards, Escobar has had some great training from Jykine Bradley, with Bradley Sport Performance, who has helped to focus on essential skills for the field. Escobar’s participation in Bradley’s training is helping him to not only learn new skills but to learn how to use them on the field to become an even bigger asset to his team. With the help of Bradley Sport Performance, Escobar is becoming a better play for his team on and off the field.

Congratulations and good luck Anthony!

Staff Report
BRANT NEWS

Austin Wagenaar is a Grade 10 student at Pauline Johnson. He plays a wide variety of sports in and out of school.

Wagenaar started his athletics as a seven-year-old playing soccer. From there the commitment to sports seemed to grow as the years went on. After soccer, Wagenaar decided on baseball for a couple of years and got a basis for the sport.

It was in Grade 8 that Wagenaar got the male athlete of the year award, and from there he blew into the world of athletics. At the age of 12, he started playing house league ball hockey for Ball Hockey International. Wagenaar continues to play for BHI, but now also plays for Brantford Thunder, a travel team for ball hockey.

Now as a high school student, Wagenaar hasn’t held back on getting involved in school sports too. He has joined the baseball team at P.J., bringing out the skills he learned as a kid. Even more impressive is Wagenaar’s spot as captain of the junior basketball team, where he also won the Heart & Hustle award. In addition to these, Wagenaar is also the starting quarterback and captain of the junior football team. In last year’s season, he won the junior football player of the year award.

With these commitments, Wagenaar also manages to work part time and keep up respectable grades to help pursue his dreams of going to school for athletics.

Congratulations and good luck Austin!
