The Six Nations Rebels will travel with heavy hearts as they take a 2-0 playoff series lead to Akwesasne on Friday.
The Junior B lacrosse team is saddened by the sudden death of team member Carney Johnson on Monday.
“It is with great sadness and sorrow the Six Nations Rebels lacrosse team has lost the heart and soul of their 2012 squad,” a media release from the club says. “Carney Elijah Johnson has passed away. Our condolences go out to Tom Johnson and Anita Deats Hill and their family for the loss of their son.”
The team did not provide details about the circumstances surrounding Johnson’s death in the media release.
Johnson scored a goal on Sunday as the Rebels secured an 8-7 victory against the Akwesasne Indians at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior B finals.
He had three assists on Saturday night in the Rebels 15-6 win in Game 1.
Johnson, 19, had played three seasons with the Rebels and was part of the Founders Cup winning team last year. The Rebels will host the 2012 Founders Cup beginning next week.
