Sixteen Brantford competitors were part of the Canadian team that travelled to the World Karate Organization championships in Phoenix, Arizona, last week.
And the 37-member Canadian team brought home the highest medal count of the championships, which featured participants from around the world.
The local competitors all train out of Don Warrener’s Martial Arts Academy with head instructor and president of the Canadian World Karate Organization David Turkoski.
Turkoski assembled a team with coaches from Windsor, St. Catharines and Kitchener featuring competitors from around the region.
The 16 Brantford competitors each brought home at least one medal and finished with a total of 14 first place medals, nine second place medals and 12 third place medals.

Jim Appleby – Gold in kata, bronze in sparring.
Krista Appleby – Gold in sparring, bronze in kata.
