The team fell short of a championship, but point guard Adrian Mendoza solidified himself as one of the best young basketball players in the region at the Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association junior boys tournament.
Mendoza had the crowd at John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute in Guelph chanting his number during an epic finish to Monday’s semifinal game against the St. Mary’s High School Eagles.
Down by five points with 5:30 left in the game, Mendoza went on a 6-0 run to gain the lead for St. John’s. The Green Eagles outscored St. Mary’s 22-6 in the final five and a half minutes to earn a 61-50 victory.
Mendoza couldn’t conjure up the same heroics during the tournament final on Monday evening.
The Sir John A. Macdonald Highlanders managed to hold Mendoza to 23 points en route to a 62-50 victory over St. John’s.
CWOSSABasketball.com called Mendoza “arguably the best individual performer in the tournament.”
During pool play on Saturday, the Green Eagles also defeated the Waterloo Collegiate Institute Vikings 40-37 and Guelph’s Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute Spartans 43-34.
