No success at CWOSSA for Brant volleyball squads

Brant News

Sean Allen BRANT NEWS Hosting the regional AAAA CWOSSA girls volleyball tournament did not provide an advantage for the St. John's College Green Eagles senior girls or Assumption College Lions junior girls teams. Both squads were eliminated during pool play at the Central Western Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association tournament on Friday at their respective schools. The senior Green Eagles lost their first game to the John F. Ross Secondary School Royals 12-25 and 17-25 and dropped a later decision to the Grand River Collegiate Renegades 17-25 and 23-25 to exit the tournament. "Mentally, we just weren't as strong," SJC coach Jeff DeProsperis said. "We let both teams go on big runs and started playing well at the end of sets, but it was too late." DeProsperis is looking forward to many players on his squad returning to the court next year. He believes they will have more potential for success with a Brant high school season to work on their game. "Because we didn't have a season it was tough for us to get better," he said. "We were up and down, inconsistent, not training as much and not playing as many games. It was tough." DeProsperis believes only Megan Piette and Skylar Turkiewicz will be leaving the team, with several Grade 12 students planning on returning for a fifth year of high school. The St. Mary's High School Eagles went on to win the senior tournament. The ACS Lions did not fare much better in the junior AAAA CWOSSA tournament hosted at their school. The Lions lost two quick sets to the St. Mary's High School Eagles 14-25 and 9-25. Though they stole a set from the Waterloo Collegiate Institute Vikings, Assumption fell 25-20, 14-25 and 7-15. The junior Green Eagles were given last-minute entry into the tournament when a team pulled out. SJC lost games to the Resurrection Catholic Secondary School Phoenix, 14-25 and 17-25, and the John F. Ross Royals, 14-25, 26-24 and 8-15, to also bow out before the semifinals. The Vikings defeated St. Mary's to capture the junior AAAA CWOSSA title.
