David Hearn had his best season on the PGA Tour, Adam Henrique put together a memorable rookie season in the NHL, Krista DuChene made headlines for her marathon efforts and David Knevel was one of the most sought after Canadian football recruits ever.
But who should be the Frank Tomlin Memorial Award winner as Brant’s sportsperson of the year?
Hearn, Henrique, DuChene and Knevel are just four of the athletes from Brant who could be nominated for the top prize at the Brantford Sports Council’s eighth annual Sports Recognition Banquet.
Past winners of the award include rugby player Aaron Carpenter, Brantford Red Sox owner Paul Aucoin, NCAA golfer Jennifer Kirby and former NFL lineman Nick Kaczur. Hearn won the award when he first broke onto the PGA Tour in 2004.
Nominations for nine categories of awards are being sought by the sports council as it highlights Brant’s top athletes, teams, volunteers and sponsors of 2012. The deadline to submit a nomination is Jan. 25.
Nomination forms are available by contacting the city’s parks and recreation department by phone at 519-756-1500 or by e-mail at email@example.com.
Awards include coach of the year, male and female youth leadership, sports volunteerism, sponsorship commitment to sports and sportsmanship.
The Sports Recognition Banquet will be held on Feb. 7 at the Branlyn Community Centre. Brantford’s Olympic runner Kevin Sullivan will be the keynote speaker.
Tickets for the banquet are available at the parks and recreation department at 1 Sherwood Dr.
