Blessed Trinity Thunder running back Austin Whetton is tackled by North Park Collegiate players during the Ontario Regional Junior Football Championship quarter-final on Tuesday at Bisons Alumni Field at the Gretzky centre.
The football season is over for Brant’s top junior teams.
Both the champion North Park Collegiate Trojans and the runner-up Assumption College Lions advanced to the Ontario Regional Junior Football Championship this season, but both teams were knocked out in their quarter-final games this week.
The Lions lost a 34-31 decision in overtime on Friday to Pickering. The game ended 28-28. Kevin Cann kicked a field goal for the Lions before Pickering scored a major on their overtime possession to end Assumption’s season.
On Tuesday, The Trojans fell behind 21-0 before halftime and were down 28-0 in the third quarter against the Blessed Trinity Thunder from Grimsby.
North Park fought back with a pair of touchdowns – a running touchdown from Keaton Wray and a blocked kick touchdown by Matt Minutillo – to make it 28-12.
But the Thunder weren’t done scoring either and the game ended 42-29 in favour of the team from Grimsby.
