Lottery retailers in Burford might be bracing for an increase in ticket sales following another big win by a resident of the County of Brant village.
The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission last week announced that Burford resident William Harrison had claimed a $1 million prize after playing a $100 Millions Jumbo scratch ticket. Harrison is a lucky guy. In 2010, he won $500,000 playing a different scratch and win game.
While the $1 million winning ticket was sold at Pioneer Snack Express on Colborne Street, we’ve noticed a pattern when it comes to Burford residents winning the lottery.
Other winners in recent years include Bob Poetz, Robert Geier and Don Colcuc, all ginseng farmers from the Burford area, who shared a $23-million Lotto Max jackpot in September 2010. Last year, the OLG announced that Daniel MacGregor of Burford was a winner, after it was discovered that he and six of his friends were the victims of a lottery scam dating back to December 2003. The seven men were each presented winnings of more than $2.1 million.
And who could forget the story of Raymond Sobeski, who in 2004 claimed a $30 million prize. At the time, it was the biggest lottery win in Canadian history.
The lesson here? Perhaps it’s worth a drive to Burford to pick up that Lotto 6-49 ticket you were thinking of purchasing for this weekend’s draw. After all, isn’t anything that improves your chances worth the effort?
