A Burlington-based band that went viral on YouTube last year for its unique cover of Gotye’s hit song Somebody That I Used To Know shot a music video at Brantford’s Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts on Friday and Saturday.
Walk Off The Earth shot a full-length music video with the help of about 250 extras for the band’s new original song, Speeches, at the downtown theatre. The tune is featured on the five-member band’s recently-released Columbia Records EP, Revo.
Keyboardist Mike Taylor said the Sanderson Centre provided the perfect setting for the video.
“Geographically, this is reasonably close to us and this theatre is a gem,” Taylor said during an interview. “The features are majestic and that is what this video calls for.”
Since the band’s formation in 2006, the group has produced two albums and an EP, while stocking its YouTube channel full of both cover and original songs.
“We have a significant presence on YouTube and a steady stream of videos we put on our channel,” Taylor said. “Our video channel has between 60 and 70 songs on it. This video is one of a long list we will host on that channel.”
The band makes use of numerous instruments to form its sound.
“We use a variety of instruments, which range from ukuleles to trumpets to vibraslaps,” Taylor said. “Every one of our songs is different and our listeners can take what they want out of them.”
Drummer Joel Cassady said the band has come a long way since it formed in Burlington six years ago.
“It’s cool because for the longest time we weren’t able to do a big-budget shoot like this,” Cassady said. “This versus the home-made cell phone videos we made when the band had its start.”
Walk Off The Earth will embark on its third European tour in mid-March following a short tour in the southern U.S.
“(Revo) will be our major-label debut,” Cassady said.
The band’s cover of Somebody That I Used To Know – in which all five members play one guitar – has so far generated nearly 145 million hits on YouTube.
Television host Ellen DeGeneres featured Walk Off The Earth on her show in January 2012.
The weekend video shoot included about 250 extras. About 40 dancers from Stars Academy dance studio in Burlington participated in the shoot.
Rachel Balon of Hamilton said she was excited to be an extra in the video.
“I’m a mega-fan,” Balon said. “It is wonderful to hear them carry on their sound.”
