BCHU initiative encourages families to make smoke-free film choices
Anna Woytaz, left, Olivia Sykes and Madelaine Brown of the Brant County Health Unit’s smoke-free movies initiative hosted an information booth at the Lynden Park Mall on Saturday highlighting the negative influence that images of smoking in movies has on youth. Woytaz said adult ratings should be assigned to movies that depict smoking in order to reduce the number of smoking images children and youth are exposed to in films. In 2009, 45 per cent of movies that included tobacco use were youth-rated in Canada, according to statistics distributed by the health unit.
