COLUMN: Ontario government moves to support child care

In June 2012, the Government of Ontario released the Modernizing Child Care in Ontario: Sharing Conversations, Strengthening Partnerships, Working Together discussion paper.

As noted in the discussion paper, the government heard that “funding for child care must include an efficient funding formula.”

The formula, it was argued in the discussion paper, should be transparent and “informed by evidence and experience to support accessibility for families and quality for children and child care operators.”

On Dec. 18, 2012, the government went further and revised the child care funding formula. The objective of the new funding formula is to “modernize the approach to operating funding beginning in 2013.”

According to the government, the new funding formula offers a more transparent and equitable approach to funding that responds to demand for services, helps stabilize fees and improves reliability of child care to better meet the needs of child care operators and parents.

So what does this mean for you and your child?

Here in the City of Brantford, funding is expected to increase to $7 million for 2013. The city manages services for the City of Brantford and County of Brant. This is an increase of $1,317,754.
