No foul play in Ruffian Road explosion

Staff Report
BRANT NEWS

An explosion that killed a Ruffian Road resident and caused damage to multiple homes last August has been deemed non-accidental with no foul play suspected.

After a lengthy investigation that involved many agencies, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the explosion that levelled a two-storey house at 55 Ruffian Rd. was “by way of an incendiary act,” but that foul play was not involved.

The investigation into the origin of the explosion involved Brantford fire and police services, the province’s Technical Standards and Safety Authority, Brantford Building Department, the Centre for Forensic Sciences, as well as the regional coroner’s office and utility company Union Gas.

Brantford firefighters contained the blaze to the single dwelling, which had collapsed into the basement. Debris from the blast affected numerous homes throughout the area.

    — “No foul play” might be considered a poor choice of words by people who are literally minded. That was a decent house that brew up on purpose.

The article said “the explosion that levelled a two-storey house at 55 Ruffian Rd. was “by way of an incendiary act,” but that foul play was not involved”.

I guess that means somebody did not purposely set off the explosion and fire.

But what does “by way of an incendiary act” mean?

Was it a gas leak where gas was ingnited inadvertently by a spark from turning on a light or lighting a cigarette? What was the actual cause?
