A routine grocery run to Sobey’s turned into a dream come true for Paris resident James Devereux, who won $1.6 million in multiple prizes from the Sept. 19 Lotto 6-49 draw.

Devereux, a retired truck driver who plays the lottery every week, bought the winning ticket at the Sobey’s on Grand River Street.

His wife of 49 years checked the winning numbers online and had a hunch they were onto something special, so Devereux headed off to the nearest retailer to scan their ticket.

“I stood in front of the self-checker for a few seconds in complete disbelief, so I checked it repeatedly until it sunk in,” Devereux said.
Devereux plans to put his windfall toward a happy retirement with his two children and two grandchildren.

“My wife and I are so happy,” he said.
