BRANT NEWS
I was pleasantly surprised at the Canadian Home Furnishings Market to see that through creative colours and design we are bringing fun into our furnishings.
Although I am a huge supporter of buying practical for long-term enjoyment, not all pieces need to be a commitment.
We are quite a conservative group here in Canada and tend not to delve outside the box, but this year there was more of a nod to the sheer enjoyment of pieces for the visual effect rather than a timeless heirloom quality.
Part of the enjoyment at this year’s Canadian Home Furnishings Market were pop-up vignettes by Janette Ewen, the market’s design spokesperson. These wonderful displays provided a peek at exciting show products and whimsical ways to incorporate them into decor. Themes ranged from this year’s pop colour, orange, in the Orange Crush display, to Glitteratti, a celebration of everything with sparkle, shine or a metallic look.
In Canada, Quebec manufacturers lead the way in trends and fashion-forward pieces that snag your attention with design and colour. One of my favorite infusers of fun products was NCA Design, based in St. Leonard, Quebec. They had impact pieces such as silver and gold side chairs, as well as shaped cocktail and coffee tables. Mirrors, vases and dynamic accessories in high shine enamels and bubble gum colours brought a smile to your face.
Jaymar continues to be mindful of small spaces and big comfort. A new addition to the already hot-selling line of compact yet irresistible chairs the new No. 509, which is sleek with a slightly angled back. The matching ottoman allows for total comfort, whether reading or media viewing. Retail price for both is $1,849.
Hi-Line Gifts has an interesting 3D lantern. These snap together plastic lights can be hung or created for floor or table top and be made into different shapes and sizes. They are relatively inexpensive and a definite conversation item.
At Mura-Mur concept, event planners and retail display designers will love the new Pleksi panels. These square, lightweight decor panels easily hook together to form divider walls and displays for commercial or residential uses. They are easy to use, have great visual appeal and are available in metallic or coloured options. Watch the many uses on YouTube.
The Moment collection from Huppe furniture was another visual display of great contemporary style, as well as fabulous wood grain working to provide attention to detail and giving a nod to nature.
Area rugs inspire fun this year, from denim pockets stitched together to create a laid-back look to rainbow shag area rugs vivid with dynamic colour. Hellenic rugs took a classic area rug and framed it in crystals for added glamour.
So go ahead, why not make 2012 the year to restore the “fun” in your decor.
