Mike Moore is about to journey to where no Brantford motivational speaker has gone before.
The humourist will head to Cape Canaveral, Florida, to offer humour and motivational tips to the staff at the NASA Kennedy Space Center on Feb. 28 and Feb. 29.
“I’ve gotten some real nice gigs over the years, one in Hawaii, one in Las Vegas, but this is the biggest,” Moore said. “It felt great to get the e-mail. I thought to myself, this is a step.”
With NASA’s space shuttle program coming to an end last year after a 30-year run, Moore was asked to come in to help the program’s employees deal with the change.
“The shuttle program has terminated and they are now trying to go into the future with a new program, but there are people who have been laid off, jobs don’t exist anymore,” Moore said. “A lot of the people remain in a state of flux. They don’t know what the new program is going to be about. Their workload has increased. Morale is low and stress is high.”
Moore will spend one day speaking to “big wigs,” including engineers and scientists, and a second day speaking to other Kennedy Space Centre staff members. He will present a talk titled “Stretched to the Limit.”
“It’s about managing stress using humor and a positive attitude,” Moore said. “There is no such thing as a stressful situation. It is only a stressful response to the situation.”
A retired teacher, Moore travels across North America presenting between 25 and 30 motivational talks each year. He’s also the author of books including How to Avoid Getting Old and Embracing the Mystery.
“I’m having the time of my life doing what I love, teaching, meeting people, travelling and sharing the message that life is a mystery to be lived, not a problem to be solved.”
