BRANT NEWS
Brantford’s emergency response community is mourning the loss of Capt. Dave Cartmel, a 27-year veteran of the Brantford Fire Department who died Monday morning at the Stedman Community Hospice.
Cartmel died in the line of duty from an illness deemed under presumptive legislation to be connected to his firefighting career, which spanned over three decades. The respected commander joined the Brantford Fire Department in 1986 and was promoted to captain in 2006.
His funeral, to be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at New Life Church, 85 Clench Ave., will include full fire department honours.
Visitation will take place at Dennis Toll funeral home at 55 Charing Cross St. on Thursday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Cartmel is survived by his wife, Debbie, and their two sons, Ben and Matt.
“Dave was a fantastic firefighter and officer who touched the lives of all of us here at the Brantford Fire Department,” said Brantford Fire Chief Jeff McCormick. “More importantly, Dave was a terrific family man. Our thoughts and prayers are with Debbie, Ben, Matt and the entire Cartmel family at this time.”
