The County of Brant hopes to stretch its share of federal and provincial stimulus funding further after two road projects came in under budget. The county is looking at a surplus for Bishopsgate Road and County Highway 54 resurfacing projects, which were funded by upper levels of government. “If we can work with the province to put these funds to other projects, it just makes sense,” public works chair Coun. Brian Coleman said. County council approved two resolutions at its last meeting to go back to the provincial and federal governments and seek approval to spend the surplus money on other road projects. With the leftover funds from the Bishopsgate Road work, the county is looking to upgrade both Vanessa Road and Oakland Road. With the surplus from the Highway 54 project, the county would resurface several streets in Burford. The $6.3-million resurfacing of Bishopsgate Road was announced as part of last summer’s infrastructure stimulus program. The cost of the Vanessa Road work is estimated at $221,000 and the work on Oakland Road is estimated at $1.3 million. The $3.5-million resurfacing of Highway 54 was awarded through a provincial grant in March 2008. The resurfacing work for five streets in Burford is estimated to cost $440,000.
