A new fashion boutique has opened its doors in Brantford to support women in need.
Closet Couture, located at 222B King George Rd., offers a wide selection of women's apparel. All proceeds raised through the store will support programs offered by Nova Vita Domestic Violence Prevention Services.
Store co-manager Jackie Haigh said Closet Couture carries high-end women's fashion brands at reasonable prices.
"We have previously-loved women's clothing and apparel, including jewelry, shoes, purses and clothing," Haigh said. "There is no tax on anything. We want to specialize in high-end brands.
"Nova Vita is about giving women a new beginning in life. When a woman puts on new clothes, shoes or accessories, it allows her to take a new direction and empower herself with a new beginning."
Haigh said the store received much support from the community and a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to help set up shop.
"We have had a huge amount of support from local businesses and the whole community to put this store together," Haigh said.
Michelle Heaslip, community development co-ordinator with Nova Vita, said the idea for Closet Couture came after a women's shelter in London launched a similar business.
"We met with them in London and their store has been very successful," Heaslip said. "The response has been very positive.
People can clean out their closets and help support us through the funds raised at the store."
Heaslip said expected cuts in provincial funding next year were part of Nova Vita's motivation to open the store.
"If Closet Couture can bring in about $30,000 per year, we can keep all seven beds in our homeless shelter open and fund them," Heaslip said. "We received just over $100,000 over 18 months from the Trillium Foundation to get the store up and running."
Closet Couture is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The store can be reached at 519-758-0808.
Monetary and clothing donations for Closet Couture can be made at Nova Vita Domestic Violence Prevention Services, located at 59 North Park St., between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Closet Couture will hold a grand opening ceremony on Sept. 25.
