Victims of cancer will be remembered and survivors will be honoured during Brant’s 12th annual Relay For Life.
The Canadian Cancer Society Brant-Norfolk branch has opened registration for the 12-hour, overnight fundraiser scheduled for June 7 and June 8 at Lions Park in Brantford.
Lacey Kempinski, fundraising co-ordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society Brant-Norfolk branch, said the event raises money to fund both cancer research and support programs.
“Our hope is by having people participating in Relay For Life in Brant, that we’re fighting back against the disease,” Kempinski said. “Relay For Life is the Canadian Cancer Society’s signature event, which raises funds for research and support programs.”
Kempinski said the organization is hoping to attract 800 participants, and raise $150,000 locally during this year’s event.
About 400 people participated in last year’s Relay For Life event, raising $107,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
“One in three people will be touched directly or indirectly by cancer in their lifetime,” Kempinski said. “We will hold a survivors’ victory lap and we’re always looking for cancer survivors to join us.”
Registered individuals and teams are invited to bring tents for an overnight stay that includes music, food, activities and entertainment. This year’s theme is “circus,” Kempinski said.
“We will have clowns and balloon animals,” she said. “It is a very family-friendly event.”
More than $17 million was raised through 108 Relay For Life events held in Ontario last year, Kempinski said.
