Bowl for Kids Sake

Brant News

Krysten McCumber BRANT NEWS Big Brothers Big Sisters is telling the nation that it’s time to “step up and strike out bullying” in 2013. Bowl for Kids Sake, an annual fundraiser run by Big Brothers Big Sisters, is celebrating the organization's centennial anniversary with a “100 years of fun and friendship” theme. The event will take place at Echo Bowl in Brantford from April 5 to April 7. On the Friday, businesses are encouraged to reward employees who collect pledges with the afternoon off. The goal of the 2013 campaign is to raise $100,000 between the Haldimand, Norfolk and Brant communities. “It’s a big goal but I’m confident we will reach it,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters resource co-ordinator Renee VanderHarst. Last year's campaign brought in $73,625, but sponsorship went up 30 per cent, which VanderHarst said is an encouraging sign for this year. All of the proceeds raised will support Big Brothers Big Sisters youth programs. “These programs give the youth an adult role model that isn’t an authority figure, that can help them with self-esteem, making better decisions and ultimately reaching their full potential,” VanderHarst said. Mentors have proven to be very successful in changing the attitudes of their “littles” toward bullying and negative behaviours. Bowl for Kids Sake will help these programs reach more children and teenagers in Brant. Currently, Big Brothers Big Sisters helps more than 430 local youth, with another 63 on a waiting list to be matched with a big brother or sister. For more information about Bowl for Kids Sake and how to get involved, contact VanderHarst at 519-759-3222. Online donations can be made at www.bigbrothersbigsisters.ca/granderie.
