Local home sales down in December, average price rises
The number of homes sold in the Brantford area was down last month, but the average price of homes rose during the same period, according to numbers released Tuesday by the Brantford Regional Real Estate Association.
Home sales through the MLS system in Brant numbered 83 units in December. Sales were down by 14 per cent from levels reported during the same month in 2011.
"December is always the slowest month of the year for sales activity, but this December was a little quieter than usual," said John Oddi, president of the Brantford Regional Real Estate Association. "At the same time, we've recently seen an acceleration in the average selling price and that trend continued in December."
The dollar value of home sales in December totalled $20.3 million, down by seven per cent on a year-over-year basis.
Total sales activity in the Brantford area numbered 89 units in December, down by 13 per cent from the same month in 2011. The total value of all property sales was $21.4 million, down by 11 per cent from December 2011.
A total of 1,983 homes traded hands last year, up by one per cent from 2011.
The average price of a home sold last month was $244,262, up by nine per cent from December 2011. The annual average selling price last year was $245,436, up by three per cent from 2011.
New residential listings numbered 118 units in December, down by seven per cent from a year earlier. There were 548 active residential listings on the association's MLS system at the end of last month, up by eight per cent from the same time last year.
