City council approves funds for Children's Memorial Garden lighting

Brant News

Staff Reports BRANT NEWS The Children's Memorial Garden will be bathed in light after city council's committee of the whole approved an additional $10,000 for new lighting and a power source at St. Andrew's Park on Brant Avenue. The money, from the city's priorities reserve fund, will be added to the memorial garden's existing $70,000 budget. The garden will feature a sculpture by artist Heather Vollans. The mosaic sculpture was inspired by local elementary school students' reflections on loss and grief. In September, the memorial garden study group welcomed members of the public to contribute to the mosaic at two open studio sessions. Benches and areas for reflection will provide additional space for visitors to the park to reflect on the loss of a child. The artwork is expected to be installed by the end of November, with a dedication ceremony and community planting planned for spring 2013.
