Young woman charged with drugging three-month-old

A 23-year-old Brantford woman has been charged after allegedly mixing prescription drugs into her baby's formula, according to police.

Brantford police said the vice section and Children's Aid Society became involved after the child was brought to McMaster University Hospital in Hamilton due to vomiting, lethargy and diarrhea.

Medical tests revealed opiates were present in the infant's blood- sparking the police and CAS involvement.

Police said investigation revealed the mother had intentionally mixed a prescription drug into the baby's formula to cause it to become sick.

The mother was arrested Feb. 26 and charged with assault causing bodily harm and administering a noxious susbtance that endangers life or causes bodily harm.

The baby received medical treatment and was released from hospital into the care of CAS.

The accused's name is being withheld to protect the identity of the victim, police said.

The mother appears today for a bail hearing.
