Ice sculptors and snowboarders entertained families on Saturday during the third annual Frosty Fest, being held in Brantford’s Harmony Square throughout the Family Day weekend.
About 10,000 people are expected to attend the three-day winter carnival organized by Freedom House Church and City of Brantford Parks and Recreation.
New to Frosty Fest this year is a “rail jam” featuring snowboarders riding a snowy ramp set up in the middle of Dalhousie Street and performing tricks.
“Frosty Fest has grown each year and we hope people have fun,” said event co-ordinator Martin Chiarot. “We wanted to host an inexpensive weekend for Brantford families.
“There are lots of events in the summer, but the city needs a winter carnival.”
Also new to Frosty Fest this year are a Family Day pancake breakfast and performances by Canadian junior pairs bronze medallist figure skaters Mary Orr and Anthony Furiano.
City resident Darryl Turkey brought his granddaughters to Frosty Fest on Saturday.
“We have come each year since it began,” Turkey said. “It’s all about the kids. You have to enjoy what Brantford offers.”
Brian Beattie, lead pastor of Freedom House Church, said Frosty Fest provides local families a weekend full of activities.
“We really want to let the community know that churches (like Freedom House) are about the community,” Beattie said. “We want to be part of the transformation of the downtown.”
Frosty Fest continues through Monday.
